2023 saw the fourth edition of the Legacy Triathlon in Long Beach, California, an event started in 2019 to develop the 'legacy' of triathlon prior to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic & Paralympic Games. This year, we also hosted our first World Triathlon Para Cup as part of the event weekend which drew over 50 elite paratriathletes from across the globe. Finally, the jam-packed weekend was host to an Americas Triathlon cup which drew over 150 elite triathletes from North and South America. There were significant changes to the venue layout in 2023, most notably moving the finish line and expo into the Alamitos Beach parking lot and off the beach. This change provided huge operational efficiencies and also created a more traditional elite transition area flow where transition is located next to the finish chute.
The America's Triathlon Cup (North and South American Elites) races started on the beach in Long Beach. As with any ocean swim, we have to pay attention to the tides and set buoys and start lines accordingly. The buoys and start line needed to be moved significantly between the start of the men's and women's races, 90 minutes apart.
